Saint Francis University is expanding access to Catholic higher education through the new Altoona-Johnstown Catholic Leadership Scholarship, a $20,000 award for students attending public high schools and active members of parishes in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.
Providing $5,000 annually for four years, the award represents a significant investment in young Catholics who demonstrate leadership through worship, parish involvement, and service to the Church. It also creates a clear and affordable pathway for students to continue their intellectual, personal, and spiritual development within Saint Francis University’s distinctive Catholic, Franciscan community.
The Altoona-Johnstown Catholic Leadership Award complements SFU’s established financial awards for students attending Catholic high schools, including students from schools participating in the University’s PEACE Program—Partnership for Excellence in the Advancement of Catholic Education. Together, these awards complete a comprehensive suite of opportunities supporting Catholic students from both public and Catholic high schools.
Through this commitment, Saint Francis University is taking deliberate action to advance Catholic education, reduce financial barriers, and ensure that more students can benefit from an education grounded in faith, reason, service, and Franciscan values.
“The future of our Church and our communities depends upon leaders who are grounded in faith and prepared to serve,” said the Very Rev. Malachi Van Tassell, T.O.R., Ph.D., University President. “Through the Altoona-Johnstown Catholic Leadership Award, Saint Francis University is making a direct investment in those future leaders and ensuring that cost does not prevent them from experiencing the transformative power of a Catholic, Franciscan education.”
Founded by Franciscan friars with a mission centered on education and service, Saint Francis University offers students something increasingly distinctive: a rigorous academic experience strengthened by a community that intentionally develops the whole person. Students are challenged to discover their talents, deepen their sense of purpose, and prepare for lives and careers defined by leadership, compassion, and service.
To qualify, students must attend a public high school and be active members of a parish within the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. Applicants must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation and participate in liturgical ministry, youth group, or another form of service to the Church. A Letter of Endorsement from the student’s parish priest or parish administrator is required.
Students must be accepted to Saint Francis University and have their Letter of Endorsement on file with the Office of Admissions by November 15. The award cannot be combined with the Franciscan or PEACE awards, which are designated for qualifying students attending Catholic high schools.
