From Bishop Guilfoyle Academy
Fifty Bishop Guilfoyle Academy (BG) students will travel to Shanksville to participate in the 25th annual September 11 Observance Ceremony on Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Memorial Plaza. The event is expected to garner international attention.
Bianca Melgar, a BG sophomore, will sing a solo, performing Hallelujah (lyrics by Tori Kelly) at the afternoon ceremony. Karma Lopez-Oakes, a BG freshman, will open the afternoon ceremony on the violin. She will be playing two classical pieces, Sonata No.1 in G minor by Bach and Melodie by Gluck-Kriesler.
“I am honored to sing for the families of flight 93 to honor their loved ones, said Bianca. “The heroes of flight 93 gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”
“I’ve been speculating on the true meaning of sacrifice and how it impacts us today,” said Karma. “The victims of Flight 93 have demonstrated the true meaning of American spirit. These passengers knew their fate and left those who meant the most to them for the sake of the American people.”
“It is important that our students understand the significance of September 11, 2001, as a defining moment in our nation’s history, said Dr. Robert Gildea, BG Chief Education Officer. “By learning about the heroic actions of the passengers and crew aboard Flight 93, students gain a deeper appreciation for the selfless sacrifice and commitment to freedom that have helped shape our proud country.”
“It’s critical for our young people to understand what occurred on 9/11,” said Mr. Michael Cacciotti, BG Principal. “Our students were not born when this tragic act of terror occurred, and we must not forget.”
Father Jeremy Mohler, BG Chaplain, and Bob Sutton, Director of Campus Ministry, will lead the BG students in prayer throughout the day for the victims of 9/11 and for world peace.
