Saint Joseph Mission Church at Hart’s Sleeping Place is the oldest existing church building in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. It is located at 326 Strip Road in Carrolltown. Blessed in 1830 by the Prince-Priest and Servant of God Demetrius Gallitzin, the colonial-era church consists of a log structure now hidden by white shingles and surrounded by the graves of early settlers. It was the center of Catholicity in Northern Cambria County from 1830 to 1850 when Saint Benedict Parish in Carrolltown was established. Maintained by the Diocese, there are specially scheduled Masses throughout the year.
The Church will be open for public tours on the first Sundays in July and August. You can contact the curators to schedule a private tour — Floyd and Marian Farabaugh (814) 344-2601.
