Saint John Vianney Relic Coming to Diocese

The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown has been selected to participate in the Saint John Vianney Relic Pilgrimage. The relic of Saint John Vianney — his entire incorrupt heart — will be at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona on January 31, 2019. The relic will be present for veneration from 7:30 am.. until 7:30 p.m.  The Cathedral’s usual daily Mass schedule — 6:45 a.m., 8:00 a.m., and Noon — will remain in place with the addition of a concelebrated Mass at 5:30 p.m. with Bishop Mark Bartchak presiding. Priests will be available throughout the day to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

A special indulgence has been granted to all those who will make pilgrimage to the Cathedral for veneration of the first class relic of Saint John Vianney, patron of priests.

This relic pilgrimage — called “The Heart of a Priest” — to various places in the United States is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The Knights will be providing support in preparation for the visit to the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown as well as logistical support throughout the day.

“Saint John Vianney is not only the patron saint of parish priests, he is patron saint of all priests,” said Bishop Mark. “He ministered during a tumultuous time in France where so many priests were imprisoned or defected. He was given the most lowly parish assignment in the diocese. Even though he was not blessed with an abundance of talents, his pastoral ministry as a leader, reformer, and confessor was extraordinary.  What a day of blessing that this can be for our diocese which has been going through some tough times.”

We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry. Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf: Fill them with the sure knowledge of your love. Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit. Lead them to greater union with your Son. Increase their faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us. Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercession of Saint Jean Vianney, grant that your priests will be inspired to strive for holiness by the power of his example. As men of prayer, may they ponder your word, follow your will and faithfully lead the flocks you have entrusted to their care. Saint Jean Vianney, obtain for the Church an abundance of vocations to the holy priesthood. Through your intercession, may many faithful men hear Christ’s call, and respond with courage and generosity. Mary our Mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones. Intercede for our priests, so that by offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Saint Jean Vianney, patron of priests, pray for us!
