Mass with Sports Stars

Saint Michael Parish in St. Michael, and its Administrator, Father Brian Warchola, hosted a Sunday Mass with Sports Stars on January 28. Several local athletic standouts spoke about the importance of excelling in sports, but also keeping one’s Catholic faith a priority. The speakers especially directed their message to the many young athletes in the audience. Following the presentations by the athletes/coaches, Mass was celebrated.

Brian Basile — Bishop McCort Catholic High School head football coach
Briana Kostan — Standout athlete from Forest Hills High School and Seton Hill University
Pat Pecora — Hall of Famer and Pitt-Johnstown Wrestling coach
Gene Pentz – Former MLB pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros
Paul Pentz — Former Pitt-Johnstown baseball player
Joe Ridgely – Former football coach at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School and Central Cambria High School
Rick Roberts – Former MLB pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers
John Strittmatter – Three-time all-American/Two-time NCAA Division II National Champion wrestler at UPJ
Gary Vitko — Bishop McCort Catholic High School coach
Dr. Phil Woo — Bishop Carroll Catholic High School coach

Also in attendance was Mike Tomczak, Superbowl champion/former NFL quarterback for the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers (pictured above with Father Brian Warchola).
