Who are we?
The Commission for Life and Justice is composed of clergy, religious and lay faithful dedicated to creating a better understanding of the social teaching of the church and promoting a greater involvement in ministries that protect and promote human life and human dignity. The Commission was created by Bishop Joseph Adamec in 1990. It routinely sponsors workshops, speakers and retreats in various parts of the diocese to further educate and encourage individuals and parish groups about the many good works being performed within the diocesan church. The Commission meets regularly to plan activities and provide assistance to parish organizations engaged in daily efforts to build the Kingdom of God on Earth. Interested individuals are invited to contact the Commission.
Fr. John Durbin, formerly of St. Theresa Parish in Altoona, speaks to more than 60 participants about Vatican II Council and implementation. The Diocesan Commission for Life & Justice hosted its Spring Gathering “Vatican II: Why, What and Who Cares?” on Saturday April 27th at the DeSepio Institute at Saint Francis University. Fr. Durbin, now at the Diocese of Raleigh, NC, provided history, insight and deeper understanding of the council while adding human perspective to the event. Participants gained knowledge and shared a few humorous anecdotes with Fr. Durbin before eating lunch together. For more information on upcoming Life and Justice Commission events, please email us at LifeAndJustice@dioceseAJ.org to be added to our mailing list.

WHAT'S NEW?
Should taxpayers pay for abortions in PA? If we do not act, taxpayer funds may, for the first time, be used to pay for elective abortions in Pennsylvania. Our state legislature must take steps to prevent abortion coverage in the federal insurance exchanges being set up in PA. Senate Bill 3 and House Bill 818 would prohibit insurance providers that participate in the insurance exchanges from covering elective abortions. Please send a message to your legislators at www.pacatholic.org TODAY requesting that this important pro-life issue be addressed as soon as possible. |
